I've been diving on Pemba Island for over 4 decades, and I've never gotten tired of exploring its underwater wonders. It’s arguably one of the best Islands off the coast of East Africa.
There are so many amazing dive sites to choose from, each with its own unique character.
Here are a few of my favorite (out of 40+) scuba diving sites on Pemba Island:
Swiss Reef:
This site is known for its hills and large coral formations. The Swiss Reef is a great place to see schools of fish, turtles, and rays. The visibility here is also excellent, and you can often see down to 40 meters (130 feet).
Make sure you’re a certified scuba diver with much experience, before taking on this excursion.
Manta Point: This site is named after the manta rays that are often seen here. The Manta Wall is a great place to see these graceful creatures up close.
The visibility here is not always as good as the other sites, but it's still worth a visit if you're lucky enough to see manta rays.
Fungu Gap: This site is located in a channel between Njao Island and Fundu Island. Fungu Gap is known for its strong currents and deep walls as well as big schools of pelagics and rays.
This site is best for experienced divers. The visibility here is also excellent, and you can often see down to 60 meters (200 feet).
Coral Garden: This site is a great place to see a variety of coral formations, including soft corals, hard corals, and sponges.
The Coral Garden is also home to a variety of fish, such as clownfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish. The visibility here is usually good, and it's a great place to go for a relaxed dive.
The Abyss: An amazing site for huge numbers and schools of fish and monster groupers with occasional Stingrays and Hammerheads
